Fluxes, in common with all other materials referred to in this Directory are not tested for `fitness and for purpose`. The references to fluxes indicates that they have satisfied the requirements of BS 6920 `Suitability of non-metallic products for use in contact with water intended for human consumption with regard to their effect on the quality of the water`. The evaluation of the products does not cover their possible corrosive effects on tubes and fittings. Reports have been received however of corrosion arising from the misuse of various types of flux which has led to waste of water. The Scheme advises therefore that the recommendations of the manufacturers of tube, particularly stainless steel tube, should be closely adhered to. Attention is drawn to the necessity for any soldered joint to remain untouched until the solder has cooled and solidified and then any surplus flux should be wiped from the outside of the jointed pipe and removed from the bore as soon as practicable by flushing the pipe through with clean water. |
