Water Efficiency in New Buildings

Government consultation on proposals for new requirements

December 2006 – March 2007

For the Government, Defra and the Communities and Local Government departments have undertaken a public consultation on proposals to set minimum standards for water efficiency in new dwellings and new business premises in England and Wales.  A consultation document was published in December 2006 with proposals to introduce either a target for per capita consumption of water in new domestic buildings or to set maximum water consumption limits for various household water fittings such as taps and showers.  Implementation of the proposals was suggested by amendments to Building Regulations, with consequent changes to the Water Fittings Regulations.
